- Imposter Group is designed to optimize distant background objects in your scene by converting them into a billboard imposter, preserving quality while reducing rendering cost to 1 quad. It's ideal for VR scenes with limited movement areas or large desktop scenes with inaccessible backgrounds.
Usage Steps:
1. Add a new GameObject to the scene (typically a parent of background elements).
2. Add the ImposterGroup component.
3. Set your Origin point (defaults to world origin).
4. Click "Generate Imposter"!
Note: This tool is NOT meant to be a replacement for an LOD system and is for distant objects only. Generating an imposter for GameObjects near the camera can result in parallax effects.
Differences from Other Imposters:
Imposter Group is intended for background optimization, handling groups of different objects that remain stationary at a far distance. It's not meant to replace an LOD system and is designed for distant objects only.
Technical Details:
* Works with any render pipeline and any build target.
* GameObjects rendered are marked as DontSaveInBuild, allowing them to remain in the scene without contributing to the build size.
* Distance can be adjusted with a Near/Far slider, automatically calculating the position and scale.
* Advanced settings let you customize the output name/folder for generated imagery, as well as customizing where the imposter plane is positioned at.
* A singular Tag is used to mark/identify generated Imposters. Rendered assets can exist with any tag or on any layer.
* Support is available through a Discord link in the readme, and the minimum Unity version is not a strict requirement. - Technical Details:
